They're supposedly named after Abraham Lincoln, who was born in a log cabin in Kentucky and grew up in another log cabin in Indiana. These toys are notched dowel rods that resemble small logs. Today, many kids enjoy building their own miniature log cabins with toys called Lincoln Logs. When English settlers began to come to America, they often built more traditional houses and converted existing log cabins to outbuildings to be used as animal shelters or sheds. Since most log cabins were not meant as permanent dwellings, not many old log cabins still exist. Over time, a family could build a new log cabin from the ground up in just a few days. These were often pine and spruce trees, which were readily available in large numbers in the forests that covered the unsettled frontier.Īs people began to grow in their experience with building log cabins, they developed better tools to help in construction. Log cabin builders would look for the tallest, straightest trees they could find. Fortunately, the insulating properties of wood tended to make log cabins cozier than wooden huts covered with animal skins. To make their log cabins warmer and resistant to bad weather, settlers would fill the cracks between logs with mud or moss (called daubing) or sticks and rocks (called chinking). ![]() For example, they eventually created interlocking corners by cutting notches in the ends of the logs. Over time, their building processes got more sophisticated. When these peoples began to settle the Americas, they brought their traditions of building log cabins with them.Įarly settlers probably made their first log cabins by simply stacking tree trunks one on top of another and overlapping the trunks at the corners. Historians believe log cabins may have gotten their start in Northern Europe and Scandinavia. One set of machine produces anywhere between 3,000 and 8,000 blocks per day. Having a quarry also has the advantage of widening one’s customer base to include walk-in customers out to bridge the supply and demand gap in the entire market. This is what has inspired me to venture into this project. My quarry visits reveal that there is a correspondingly low number of machine cut block quarries, compared to the demand for the blocks. At every quarry that I visit, I find lorries queuing, waiting for stones to be harvested for them to load. In order to understand this phenomenon, I have been making frequent visits to the stone quarries in Kilifi. Over this period, I have always been intrigued at the lead time in ordering and receiving machine cut coral stone blocks for construction. I have been in the construction industry for the last 6 years. The business is very labour intensive as a close watch needs to be done on the machinery and quantity of blocks produced. Routine maintenance costs will be a big factor as the circular saw blades will occasionally wear out the diamond studs and also sometimes crack the metal plates. Loaders earn a current rate of 1shilling per stone. Labour is reasonably cheap, with machine operators earning an average of 600 shillings per day. This can be done till we can afford to buy ours. This one can initially be leased at a rate of about 7,000 shillings per hour. There is also need for an excavator for clearing the ground before starting to harvest in each successive sector. A new one, depending on the make, costs between 3,000,000 to 4,000,000 shillings. A second hand one can go for approximately 2,500,000 shillings. Then there is the generator, with an ideal one having a capacity of 200 to 250 KVA. Though the costs of travelling to ascertain quality and the lack of after sales service might reduce the gains of money saved on initial purchase from any of these countries. Importing from India, Italy and China are other options. Locally made, each machine costs 800,000 shillings. A set of machinery consists of one vertical cutter and one horizontal cutter. It makes more sense to lease land and pay only for actual stones harvested. Leasing land costs 3 shillings per stone harvested. More often than not, most sellers are selling parcels of land measuring either 6 acres or 12. Kilifi, Kenya is the proposed area of operation.Īn acre of land in Kilifi goes for about 200,000 shillings. In coral stone block cutting one starts off by either buying or leasing land. Assuming a high downtime of 15 days a month, this will generate a net profit of 553,500 per month. The business will bring a total of 1,107,000 shillings per month. Help us restore our precious coral reefs in real life and in Minecraft.Machine Cut Blocks Project (Business plan) Transforming coral could happen naturally or semi-automatically using a complex redstone machine. To prevent coral from transforming players' builds, they could use halfslabs or double halfslabs. This process can be hurried along by bonemeal. Once the coral has advanced past the final growth stage they should spread to the attached stone block, transforming it into a coral block of the corresponding colour. Coral and coral fans should use their random block tick to check their attached block is stone or cobblestone and, if it is, they should advance to the next growth stage. Like saplings, a coral fan or coral may go through a number of growth stages. I propose that, much like real life, coral or coral fans transform stone blocks they are attached to into a coral block of the corresponding colour. In real life coral grows on hard structures underwater, most commonly rocks. ![]() Since coral is a living organism, it stands to reason that it should be able to spread. Coral blocks are one of the most gorgeous blocks in the game. ![]() |
